Separation anxiety in toddlers:

time. They feel insecure about being left alone in school. They begin to feel uneasy even at the thought of leaving for school and think of excuses to avoid. This happens for the first few days. They begin to assimilate as soon as they make friends.

Parents:
The child's agony upsets the parents equally and they feel constantly worried. The parents should be made aware that this is common and all children go through this phase. It is considered as an important milestone in the life of a human being. It is a part of development and it is necessary for building independence.

Development of separation anxiety:
A child gets used to his mother when it is merely 4-7 months of age. It develops a bond with his mother. It needs her constantly within its sight. If the mother leaves the child alone in a room even for a few minutes it begins to cry. Babies of this age are aware of their surroundings and of their parents. So it can be said that separation anxiety begins at the age of 4 months itself. It grows and reaches climax at the age of 2 and 3, when the child begins school. After that it begins to reduce and within a few years completely vanishes. However the reduction of separation anxiety depends from child to child.

How can separation be made easier?
It is important for parents to learn that it doesn't last for very long. Only after the parents themselves are able to understand that it could be overcome, they will be able to help their children overcome it. Before sending the child to the school, the parent should have a short cheerful chat with him. The child should be assured that the parent is going to surely pick him up after the school is over. The parent should keep his promise and pick the child up on time. The parents should sometimes surprise that child by showing up early or between the school hours. But care should be taken that this doesn't interfere with the child's activities.

This problem seldom needs professional attention however parents are free to consult if they feel very concerned or if it is affecting the child physically.
